The Horsemanship merit badge was one of the original 57 merit badges issued by the Boy Scouts of America in 1911. It replaced the 1910 Horseman "Badge of Merit". At Twin View Stables we will teach the troop directly from the Merit Badge Series Book. We have broken up the requirements in a way that best helps the troop understand horsemanship.
It will take a minimum of 2 hours.

Requirement 3: Prepare for Your Ride
Requirement 4: Go on a Ride
On level ground, continuously do the following movements after safely mounting the horse. Do them correctly, at ease, and in harmony with the horse.

Requirement 3: Prepare for Your Ride
- How to lead a horse
- Tie a horse
- How to saddle and bridles a horse
- Mount and dismount your horse
Requirement 4: Go on a Ride
On level ground, continuously do the following movements after safely mounting the horse. Do them correctly, at ease, and in harmony with the horse.
- Walk the horse in a straight line for 60 feet.
- Walk the horse in a half-circle of not more than 16 feet in radius.
- Trot or jog the horse in a straight line for 60 feet.
- Trot or jog the horse in a half-circle of not more than 30 feet in radius.
- Halt straight.
- Back up straight four paces.
- Halt and dismount.
